Trapani and Erice

Trapani, located in the western part of the island, is nicknamed City between the two seas for its position, since it is bathed by both the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea; and its origins date back to 1000 B. C.

Among the monuments to visit there are the Cathedral of Trapani, from the Norman era that characterizes the area of the historic center; then the Basilica Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Annunziata, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Monte Carmelo, in gothic and baroque Renaissance style, remarkable the beautiful statue of the virgin in marble that represents her with the Child Jesus, it is said to come from Syria.
A very suggestive place is the Tramontana Walls, which you can find north of the old town, a walk about one kilometer long, from where you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the city.

A small village near Trapani is Erice, a mountain village that can also be reached by cable car in just ten minutes and which offers a breathtaking visit. To visit is the Real Madrice Insigne Collegiata Church, or Cathedral of Erice. Also, on the top of Mount Erice stands the Castle of Venus, a 12th century Norman building; surrounded by a legend of Greek mythology, according to which Erice was a giant son of the goddess Aphrodite (Venus for the Romans).

One of the most characteristic points of the city are definitely the Saline di Trapani, a place by the sea where sea salt is processed: there are interesting evidence of industrial archaeology and remarkable is the commitment to protect the flora and fauna of the place, including the pink flamingo.
